My advise to Democrats, is not to make too much of winning. A lot of voters voted for Trump.
I would also plead with Democrats to be more Republican, or at least consistent with the past good policies of Republicans. Strong leaders both at home and abroad. International cooperation with allies is essential.
Republicans were strong defenders of our national security, which meant backing NATO. An allied Europe could defend against Russian aggression. Trump has turned the brutal assault of Russia on Ukraine, as a conflict that he could solve in a matter of days, because he has such negotiating skills. It is posturing for political gain, as Ukraine suffers.
“Russia launched 289 attack drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles across nine regions, triggering emergency power cuts, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an online post that noted the barrage coincided with U.S. elections. The Russians think America won’t notice this signal of theirs,” he said. “But we need to notice and stop such terror. We need to help Ukraine defend its skies; otherwise, Russia will never stop its missile strikes.”
I give a lot of credit to Nixon, Reagan and Bush, Sr for producing real results. Bush (the father) stopped Kuwait from being taken over by Iran. He didn’t try to compromise or play “Let’s make a deal” with Iran.
The Ukraine war will come to an end when Russia withdraws their troops and ends their attacks. It deserves 100% US support.
We have Republicans to thank for the Clean Air Act and the Executive order from Nixon, consolidating government agencies in 1970. He brought in a very capable administrator to run the agency, William Ruckelshaus. After leaving the agency, Reagan brought him back.
So, what do I admire about Republican policies:
- Strong on controlling the deficits
- Strong on containing Russian aggression
- Strong on the environmental issues
So, Trump will, regardless of who runs Congress, be weak on basic Republican policies, from Nixon to Bush.
Stay tuned,
Dave
